Can I replace an HVAC unit with another model that has the same tonnage?

Not necessarily. Tonnage describes nominal cooling capacity, but it does not mean two pieces of equipment are interchangeable. Refrigerant, efficiency, electrical requirements, airflow, cabinet dimensions and connected components can all differ.

In a split air conditioning system, the outdoor condenser and indoor coil also need to be properly matched. Choosing replacement equipment based only on tonnage can result in a combination that does not meet the manufacturer's intended system requirements. Is it better to replace one HVAC component or the entire system?
